From 1959-1963, Chicago
developers imported modern masters of architecture
and planning to design a new community for Detroit.
Planner Ludwig Hiberseimer distributed high and low
rise housing across superblocks created by closing
streets. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed the
Lafayette Towers and nearly two hundred units of
townhouses arranged around cul-de-sacs.
We will be visiting three private residences, and
resident tour guide Neil McEachern will describe the
background of this historic district.
