Deco ViewBy Kathie King
It's here. All the excitement, hustle, and bustle of the holiday season in the air just doesn't compare to any other time of the year. One of the best shops to enjoy any time of the year, but especially during the holidays, is "Deco Doug," in beautiful downtown Royal Oak.
An entire era is contained within 400 square feet of shopping. Every inch counts, which is part of the energy and personality of the shop. Doug Ramsey, a.k.a. Deco Doug, has always had a strong personal vision: "All Deco - All The Time," thus bringing to us a period of tremendous significance. The shop has a feeling all its own. It conjures up images of dining, dancing, and dressing, by surrounding the shoppe r with reminders of the "dazzle" we so enjoy seeing in the glamorous movies of the 30s.
The wall-to-wall faux leopard carpet helps set the stage for all of the beautiful pieces that you could want to give as gifts this holiday, if you can bear to part with them yourself. This is the place to find those silver, peach, or blue Deco mirrors you've been looking for, and the streamlined chrome and glass cocktail shakers for that perfect martini or Gibson. To go with the stemware you might have found, you'll want to include a chrome or silver champagne bucket.
Vintage graphics from the 20s and 30s are colorful and very collectible. Beautiful Deco frames in several sizes perfectly complement your favorite photo.
Those photos and frames would look great on one of the tables that Doug has tucked in and around his shop. Exotic woods, black lacquer, lucite, wrought iron, or chrome with possibly a glass or mirrored top.
Decorative accessory designs, perfect for all those small places, are one of Doug's specialties. You'll find smoking accessories, glass, art pottery, World's Fair collectibles, neon, trays in glass or chrome, chase pieces, Bakelite (including radios), outstanding Deco clocks, and watches, watches, watches.
More intriguing than ever is the lighting selection at Deco Doug's. You'll find beauty and function. You'll find both beauty and function , whether you choose a table lamp, torchere, chandelier, or wall sconce.
Many of the furniture pieces are great example of Machine Age streamlining, using chrome, vinyl, and aluminum. Others tell a Palm Beach story, rattan or bamboo with huge curved arms and cushions brightly covered in magnolias, hibiscus, or other tropical examples of exciting 30s' textiles.
However, the best pieces are not necessarily to be found on the floor, but in the showcases. There are cigarette cases, purses, and compacts that embody the sophistication of the period. The beautiful jewelry cases with rhinestones, sterling, and Bakelite also include items for the man on your list, including cufflinks, studs, ties, scarves, and fountain pens.
Yes, Virginia, there really is a "Deco Devotee," and thanks to his hard work and good taste, your gift giving this year will be inspired.
