Miami Beach Bound
By Rebecca BinnoAs if we needed any more reasons to spend a week in Florida. Apart from the traditionally miserable weather, design buffs are looking forward to the combination of Art Deco Weekend and Miami Modernism in mid-January.
This year, Art Deco Weekend falls on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, January 12-15. In honor of this, this year's theme, "Jazzin' & Dancin' in the Art Deco District," recognizes the contribution of African-Americans to the South Beach district of Miairni, and to South Florida in general.
The 19th year of the festival will feature big band, swing, and jazz-era concerts, the Antique Automobile Parade, walking, trolley, and bicycle tours of the National Register District of Miami Beach, lecture series, street performers, and special activities for children.
Along with the live entertainment, speeches, and the traditional Deco Parade and Ball, Ocean Avenue will be closed as usual for the many booths that feature everything from interesting antiques to great food.
As an added bonus to frigid Northerners, Miami Modernism falls on the next weekend, making it possible for design, art, and history lovers to combine the two celebrations of our artistic history with a week of sunshine in a beautiful and historic area.
