DAADS Annual Membership Dinner

by Robin Cohen

On November 11th, our annual membership dinner was held at Mario’s Restaurant in Detroit. It was a wonderful evening of fun, great food, and a perfect opportunity to meet other members, as well as new members, and share a little time with each other.

We all gathered together that night because we share a common interest in a period of time that took place much earlier in this century—a period of streamlined style and grace we reverently refer to as the Deco era. Speaking for myself, it’s more than an interest, it’s an obsession!

That’s why I found particular enjoyment in the “show and tell” portion of the evening. Members brought with them their “finds” as well as items they wanted to find out more about. An entire table was dedicated to an exciting and unusual assortment of “Deco divinities.”

Al Trombetta brought a great example from his 1939 World’s Fair collection: a Fair uniform that was never worn. Rebecca Binno brought a favorite from her compact collection, and Vintage fabrics, dance floor wax, and other unusual items were displayed by Bob and Kathie King. Chuck Cirgenski and Janine Menlove needed help identifying a Deco piece of pottery. An assortment of Deco items were brought by Chuck and Kim Zuccarini, including an airplane fan, perfume bottles, dinner bells, and lighters. The romantic Tom Rusinow seized the opportunity to bestow an anniversary gift upon his wife—an exquisite perfume bottle to add to her collection, which he had discreetly placed on the table among the show and tell items.

Carol Grant and Leslie Craigie were the winners of the prizes that evening, each getting a pair of tickets to the preview party of the 1998 Michigan Modernism show. Jacques Caussin was the winner of the 50/50 Raffle, with half the money collected going to him and the other half to DAADS.

Each person received a stunning memento of the evening, a favor designed and made up by Kathie King. Kathie did a beautiful job!
