President's Notes

Dear Members:

First, I would like to thank all who helped make our Annual Membership Dinner a success, and that includes all of our members who attended.

An important part of the evening was the installation of the Board of Directors for the next year. The Board and its officers are listed on this page. A sincere thank you also goes to these people who make a strong commitment to this organization by their participation on this Board.

As an organization in our eleventh year, we have made some great strides we can all be very proud of. Our Modernism preview party is producing significant revenue as did last year’s 10th anniversary membership dinner. The Board has recently formed a Planning Committee, which is charged with the following responsibilities: updating our bylaws, establishing a yearly calendar of events and a yearly budget so that we can determine how these funds that we are accumulating can best be utilized—whether it be in preservation efforts, a scholarship fund or another worthwhile project.

In this regard, we are very proud to tell you about one such project. DAADS has formed a partnership with the Cranbrook Art Museum by becoming the exclusive sponsor for Saarinen House beginning with the 1998 tour season.

Saarinen House is the 1930 home, studio, and garden of the Finnish-American architect Eliel Saarinen, Cranbrook’s resident architect from 1925 to 1950 and Cranbrook Academy of Art’s first president from 1932 to 1946. Restored and listed on the register of National Historic Landmarks, the extraordinary interiors feature Saarinen’s architectural detailing and furniture and his wife Loja’s textiles. The house now is operated as a historic house-museum by Cranbrook Art Museum and is open for public and private tours from May through October each year.

The benefits for DAADS and its members are many, beginning with local and national press and the opportunity for DAADS to host a private event at Cranbrook. Best of all, it will provide our members with many occasions to become better acquainted with the awe-inspiring designs of Saarinen House, the brilliance within Cranbrook Art Museum, and the breathtaking beauty of Cranbrook itself through upcoming tours and visits.

We are very excited with this new association and wish to thank Greg Wittkopp, Director of Cranbrook Art Museum for this wonderful opportunity. We are also looking forward to many other exciting things to take place within the Daads organization in the near future. If you would like to be more actively involved, please feel free to drop me a line or give me a call. We would welcome your help in any form.

Thank you and enjoy!
