Michigan Modernism

by Robin Cohen

The fifth annual Michigan Modernism Exposition was held April 25 and 26, with the Gala Preview on Friday evening, April 24.

Over eight of the nation’s top dealers in 20th Century design exhibited in the show, nationally recognized for its quality. People arrived from all over the country to see the magnificent displays one could only hope to see in a show of this caliber or at a museum.

The Preview Party proved to be the party of the year! Guests enjoyed delicious hors d’oeuvres expertly prepared by Canape Cart, along with wine and full bar.

For this year’s DAADS booth, the Deco Society joined with Cranbrook Art Museum to highlight the work of noted Finnish-American architect and designer Eliel Saarinen, and his wife, textile designer Loja Saarinen, during their residency at Cranbrook.

The booth contained a collection of reproduction objects and furniture from Saarinen House rarely displayed off the grounds of Cranbrook, as well as a time line display of the Saarinens’ careers. Gregory Wittkopp, the Director of Cranbrook Art Museum, was on hand to share his vast knowledge and answer questions.

Serious collectors were thrilled to preview the show before the public opening on Saturday morning, while others were content to sip wine, sample the sumptuous food and enjoy the music. It was a spectacular evening for all.

Michigan Modernism 1998 was an overall success for patrons, dealers and DAADS!
