The Modern

President's Notes

By Robin Cohen
President, Detroit Area Art Deco Society

We are very proud to present to you to the Modernism show edition of The Modern, which doubles as the program for the second Great Lakes Modernism, an outstanding show and sale of the finest in 20th Century Design and Decorative Arts.

This year, DAADS pays tribute to the Italian designers of the 20th Century with a very colorful and exciting exhibit at the show, and dedicates this issue to 20th Century Italian Design, as well. Such celebrated designers as Fornasetti, Sottsass, and the Castigilioni brothers will all be represented, so please visit the DAADS booth and take time to review this issue, as well.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank our show promoters, Bob Smith and Rosemary Kreiger of Dolphin Promotions and Jacques Caussin for their dedication and tireless efforts to produce a quality Modernism show of national significance. They are a very professional team and wonderful to work with.

As in past years, DAADS is pleased to host the Friday Evening Preview Party. This is our ninth year of hosting this annual fundraiser, and proceeds benefit The Detroit Area Art Deco Society, a non-profit organization. Preservation of the Deco era through education, sponsorship, and support is our primary goal. Proceeds from this event have allowed us to fund an annual scholarship to the Historic Preservation Program at Eastern Michigan University, exclusive yearly sponsorship of Saarinen House at Cranbrook Art Museum, the Brodhead Armory WPA Art Restoration project, the Dymaxian House exhibit at The Henry Ford, grants in support of Preservation Wayne, as well as many other events/exhibits in support of 20th century design and preservation.

To that end, we also wish to thank you, our members and patrons of the show who appreciate the designs, art and architecture of the 20th Century, and attend this Gala Preview to celebrate Modernism and support DAADS.

Welcome and Enjoy!
