The Modern

President's Notes

I am somewhat saddened (and admit, somewhat relieved, as well) to announce that my term as President has come to an end. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in this position and have worked with a truly remarkable group of people on our Board. With their help DAADS has made some important contributions to our community during these last six years. I will continue to be a member of DAADS' Board of Directors.

At last month's General Membership meeting, the following people were installed as the new officers of The Detroit Area Art Deco Society:

President, Rebecca Binno Savage
Vice President, Gary Spondike
Secretary, Kathleen King
Treasurer, Frank Edwards
Please join me in congratulating these dedicated individuals. I'm sure none of their names are new to you; all have a long history of commitment to DAADS. Both Frank and Kathie have been re-elected to their respective positions for another term - that's what you get for doing such a great job!

Rebecca and Gary have also been an integral part of this organization - and its accomplishments - for some time. Rebecca is deeply committed to the preservation of the Art Deco era. She was very involved in the establishment of both our Annual Preservation Award - bestowed upon an worthy organization that has recently completed a preservation/restoration project; and the Annual Historic Preservation Scholarship Award at EMU - $1, 000 won by one student based on the submission of a paper related to the study of art deco architecture.

Gary has been the Editor - and the backbone - of The Modern for a number of years, and was instrumental in its change from a newsletter to the fabulous multicolor magazine it currently is.

Rebecca and Gary make a great team, and we are privileged to have their leadership! Congratulations and commendations should also go to Ron Ortiz as the new Editor of The Modern, as well as staff, Bob King (Advertising) and Emily Ewing (Graphic Design/Lay-out), and to Carl Cohen and Jeff Chappell, who will continue to act as Membership Chair and Webmaster, respectively.

The future of DAADS could not be in better hands!

Sincerely,
Robin Cohen

P.S. Please allow me to take this opportunity to congratulate Kip and Emily Ewing on the birth of their son, Lucas!

DEAR MEMBERS:

I am honored to be able to serve as the next president of the Detroit Area Art Deco Society. This organization has been a part of my life since I first joined in 1991. Since that time, it has been my privilege to serve on the board of directors, and to be able to work with all of the past presidents of the Deco Society.

Robin Cohen did an outstanding job of leading the board of DAADS in fundraising for our annual scholarship and the support of non-profit organizations and their historic preservation projects. It will be a challenge to match Robin's accomplishments, but thankfully, she is staying on our Board of Directors. Thank you Robin, for all your volunteer time, hard work and dedication - you left an amazing legacy!

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the Detroit Area Art Deco Society's board members for their support and encouragement. My plans are to continue working toward the same goals, increase awareness of DAADS, and to increase our membership. Because of my background in historic preservation, I will make sure we continue to advocate for the preservation of our 20th Century architecture in the Detroit area. I'm looking forward to working with all of you!

Rebecca Binno Savage
