The Detroit Area Art Deco Society (DAADS) knows how to throw a party. This past year DAADS hosted the Gala Preview Party to celebrate the Second Annual Great Lakes Modernism Show. Against a backdrop of the finest in 20th century design and decorative arts, the celebration featured the fabulous Shannon Wade Trio with nostalgic tunes of the era, and sumptuous hors d'oeuvres, desserts, and wine provided by Toast of Ferndale. The Preview Party promised and delivered an unforgettable evening with partygoers sporting their favorite classic vintage and party attire!Once again, DAADS presented another exciting visual exhibit during the show. "Italian by Design", highlighting the incredible contributions to modern design made by such noted Italian designers of the 20th Century as Piero Fornasetti, Ettore Sottsass, Joe Colombo, Gio Ponti, Guido Gambone, Michele DeLucchi, Alessandro Mendini, Gae Aulenti, Castiglioni, Memphis, Alchimia, Archizoom, and Gaetano Pesce. Furniture, ceramics, glass and sculpture examples showcased the quintessential work of these 2oth Century masters. We would like to acknowledge all the efforts of John Henke, Tom Verwest and all of our volunteers for all their work and dedication in creating this outstanding display and show.
This year's Great Lakes Modernism Show will be held in October 2004, look for more details in the next issue of The Modern.
PALM SPRINGS - AN OASIS IN THE DESERT!

What better place to find that perfect touch for your mid-Century desert hideaway than the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale which was held February 13, 14, & 15 in sunny southern California! Apparently that was the consensus of modern collectors who visited the 4th annual show over Presidents Day weekend.A great selection of vintage 20th Century furniture, fine arts and decorative arts was presented by 75 handpicked dealers, many from the West Coast, but others coming from as far away as New York, Miami, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas and Detroit! High quality mid-Century furniture was a favorite of many dealers and collectors, but the show also offered all other aspects of 20th Century design.
An opening party was held on Friday evening to benefit the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation - an influential local voice for protecting many of the celebrated midCentury structures which not only made Palm Springs world-famous, but have also helped bring about its present revitalization. The preview event had a strong turnout of devotees who enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, and the chance to shop the show before it opened to the public on Saturday and Sunday.
Next year's show will be held February 18, 19 & 20, 2005 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. For more info, see ad in this issue.
