Welcome to Modernism!
We are very excited to present this edition of The Modern which includes the program for the 2005 Michigan Modernism Exposition. The Detroit Area Art Deco Society's association with the Michigan Modernism Exposition goes back over ten years, and we are thrilled to continue the association.
This year we have partnered with ArtServe Michigan to present the Preview Party - and it has turned out to be a fabulous event! Our organizations have brought together different strengths to produce a fundraiser that will benefit each organization's programs. One of our programs is featured in this issue. For the past four years we have given a $1,000 scholarship award to a graduate student at the Eastern Michigan University Historic Preservation Program. Past scholarship winner Mary Jo Byrnes' winning paper on Detroit's under-appreciated architectural gem, the Rackham Memorial Building, is in this issue. The Deco Society is happy to continue this scholarship fund.
This year we also plan to donate to the restoration of the WPA Murals Project initiated by the Royal Oak Public Schools. They are restoring three gorgeous murals which have been in storage for over 25 years. That's where the dollars for your Preview Party ticket end up!
A big thank you to M&M Enterprises' Barbara, Michael & Matthew Butler for allowing us to participate. It's great to be back!
