President's Notes

The Detroit Area Art Deco Society worked hard at our big fundraiser this past April - the Modernism Preview Party. It was truly a success. We made enough money to donate to several nonprofit organizations this year. Let me tell about it:

1. The Deco Society donated $1,000 in support of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy's annual conference - the first time it has been held in Detroit. The FLWBC helped market and advocate for the Turkel House this past year, and held a terrific conference in September.

2. We donated $500 to the Friends of the Penn Theater in Plymouth, Michigan. You may recall that this single-screen theater was saved by the Friends of the Penn Theater this year, and they've started showing movies again. We're pleased to be able to support historic preservation projects like this.

3. Two hundred dollars was donated to the Lafayette Park 50th Anniversary celebrations in Detroit. This is the district of apartments and townhouses designed by famed architect Mies van der Rohe. Fifty years of modern living in Detroit's most successful urban renewal project.

4. There was a $1,000 donation made to honor longtime Detroit Area Art Deco Society supporter, Doug McIntosh. Doug's architectural firm, McIntosh Poris, was an advertiser in "The Modern" for many years, and he also was a sponsor for our Modernism Preview Party this year. His untimely death allowed us to honor his memory with a donation to Preservation Wayne. Doug had been president of Preservation Wayne for the past nine years, and he will be missed.

5. The Deco Society renewed its longtime support of the Cranbrook Art Museum with a donation of $500.00. This donation was made in the name of Frank Edwards and Ann Williams. Frank and Ann are past board members of DAADS, and they also are supporters of the Cranbrook Art Museum. We want to thank them for years of hard work.

6. Lastly, we've been able to donate $2,000 to The Henry Ford for sponsorship of the upcoming exhibit on Charles and Ray Eames. This exhibit will highlight the Eames Chair and its history. We are excited about being involved with this exhibit - and we are going to tie the theme into next year's Modernism Preview Party. We will have more news on that to come.

So thank you for attending our events and renewing your membership. We wanted to let you know that you are supporting a worthy cause - and many other worthy causes as well! See you at our next Preview Party!
