The DAADS 2014 Preservation Award

The Detroit Area Art Deco Society is pleased to present its 2014 Preservation Award to Gregory Holm for the restoration of the Frontera Building at 1428 Gratiot, near Eastern Market. The Frontera Building houses the newly opened restaurant, Antietam.

The project actually incorporates two storefronts and restored two buildings for the restaurant space. The Frontera Buildings were restored by Mr. Holm in collaboration with architect Noah Resnick of the firm uRbanDetail, over the last two years. The building’s facades were reconstructed in the Art Deco style when Gratiot Avenue was widened in 1932, and originally housed an upscale confectionary shop. Due to years of neglect and imminent structural failure, the original facades needed to be completely removed and replaced with both new and reclaimed material. Antietam is a remarkable new restaurant that incorporates many Art Deco features in its interior space. While the goal for the exterior was to create a contemporary, yet period-appropriate composition, the interior allowed Greg to exercise his personal vision for a modern day interpretation of Art-Deco sensibilities.

The entire project was envisioned and driven to completion by owner Gregory Holm. After living in New York City for eight years he moved back to Detroit to realize his dream of owning and operating a restaurant. Many challenges had to be overcome to restore this vacant, derelict property in Detroit. Gregory re-named the buildings after his family that has been integral in Eastern Market for over a century - Frontera.

Spring 2008 DAADS Modern

In February, a couple of like-minded friends and I made a pilgrimage to attend the 21st annual Arts and Crafts Conference at the historic Grove Park Inn and Spa in Asheville, North Carolina. I call it a pilgrimage because this is like heaven for Arts and Crafts enthusiasts. And it felt like we were in heaven when we finally arrived at the inn. The first things we noticed were NO SNOW and flowers in bloom!
